With many students going on to further study, over half of this year’s enterprising cohort are setting up their own companies.

“Our 2020 Acting Graduates are a wonderfully talented group that I have had the pleasure to watch develop over the past three years,” said Lynne Seymour, Acting lecturer at UWTSD.

“They have grabbed every opportunity that has come their way and have always worked to a very high standard collaboratively as well as independently.  Several students were able to take advantage of the study abroad programme and brought back many new techniques and skills to their studies. Our international students from America and Canada, who completed their degree with us, also made a huge impact on the year group and became a vital part of the team.

“Looking to the future, several students are moving on to become educators in English and the Arts and we also have students that are continuing their practical performance studies at Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama as well as at Canolfan Berfformio Cymru within the UWTSD family. This has been a bumper year group of entrepreneurs too! Over half of the cohort are setting up their own companies within the artistic and creative industries.  While their studies were knocked off course by the pandemic this did not dampen their spirit and they continued to be resourceful, focused and good humoured throughout their time at UWTSD. They have already made huge strides in creating and Online Graduate Showcase as well as working online to further develop skills for their future plans. I can't wait to see what they achieve!”

Lucy Hope, one of those graduating this summer has loved her time on the BA Acting course at UWTSD’s Carmarthen campus and is grateful for the vast and varied experiences made available to her during her studies.

“I decided to study BA Acting at UWTSD because I wanted to enhance my acting ability in order to enter the industry as a performer, wanting to stay in Wales specifically. On the course we have had a vast range of experiences, preparing us for the industry, and have worked with lots of different directors and other creatives,” says Lucy.

“The Touring Theatre module was my personal favourite, where we toured primary schools with our ‘Theatre in Education’ show. I like how vast our experience was, we got to do a bit of everything - stand up comedy, Shakespeare, main house productions, acting through song etc. Through this course I have gained many skills which I will use in all aspects of life, made connections, increased in confidence and made lifelong friends because of the close community our course has. The lecturers are extremely supportive and helpful, and that has made a huge impact on how much I have enjoyed the course.

“This course has given me the skills and knowledge needed into entering a career in the arts, being such a collaborative course, working alongside Design and Production Students closely too we’ve had opportunities to be creative in other ways other than just acting and devising. From this course I have received an offer to study ‘MA Perfformio’ with UWTSD in Cardiff in ‘Canolfan Berfformio Cymru’. I chose this path as I’d like to enhance my singing, dance, Musical Theatre and Opera skills further so I can be a better rounded performer in the creative industry, loving to act through song specifically. Also, as a fluent Welsh speaker, it’s an ideal opportunity to branch into Welsh Theatre and TV as I plan to stay based in Wales. Enjoying my experience with UWTSD on my undergraduate course, I definitely wanted to do a postgraduate course through UWTSD too!”
