Brand new, ‘learn to teach’ Mandarin language resource for Primary School teachers
15.02.2021
'See Chinese Visual Learning' is a new approach to learning Mandarin Chinese, specially developed for the Welsh New Curriculum for Key Stage 2 by the UWTSD Confucius Institute.
The resource centres around Morgan, his family and his pets, and introduces ten attractive topics. The content includes how to write Chinese using pinyin – the Latin alphabet used to learn pronunciation – as well as simple Chinese characters. The unique approach to teaching Mandarin makes use of easy to learn colour-coded sentence patterns that can be grasped visually.
Designed as a ‘learn to teach’ Mandarin language resource for Primary School teachers, the resource doubles as a gentle and fun introduction for KS2 pupils as well.
Krystyna Krajewska, Executive Director at UWTSD’s Confucius Institute, said:
“Mandarin Chinese is one of the fastest growing languages in the world. This resource will provide new opportunities for young people to learn another language and about another culture. We hope that the ‘See Chinese Visual’ learning lessons will benefit many school communities who would not otherwise have the opportunity to study this subject.”
Teachers can sample the first four online lessons of See Chinese Visual learning. The full resource which includes ten PDF lessons and pages with illustrations will be available as part of the teachers’ course pilot which starts on Monday 1 March (delivered via Teams). The See Chinese PDF resources are available in the medium of Welsh as well as English.
The course is completely free of charge and involves a one-hour class per week after school over five weeks. Teachers will have access to the See Chinese resources which they can try out in school, or as a distance learning resource.
