The University of Wales Trinity Saint David is hosting a series of virtual events between Tuesday 23 February and Sunday 7 March to celebrate Wales’ Patron Saint, St David.

“Pethau Bychain 2021” is a celebration of Welsh culture at UWTSD and is an opportunity for the University and the community to come together to celebrate St David's Day. The programme will begin with “Indigenous Language? Mother Tongue? ” on February 23 at 7pm led by Professor Elin Haf Gruffydd Jones, Director of the Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies. During the event, there will be discussion and poetry to celebrate and mark UNESCO’s International First Language Day 2021.

On St David's Day itself, Monday 1 March, a variety of events will take place including a special service at 12:30pm hosted by the University Chaplain, the Rev Dr Emma Whittick and the Swansea College of Art annual lecture and Awards with the fashion expert, Huw Rees, attending as guest speaker.

Bethan Wyn, Branch Officer of the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol at UWTSD, has been busy over the last few weeks organising and planning this varied programme. She said:

“We have over twenty events organised for ‘Pethau Bychain’ and we are really looking forward to the opportunity to come together to celebrate St David's Day. Of course it's all going to be virtual this year but we've been able to make sure the offer is wide and varied. We have concerts, discussions, poetry, music, art, quizzes, sports and even a competition for the best Welsh cakes!

We are delighted that everyone has been so supportive. During these challenging times it is great that we still have the opportunity to celebrate our special culture and enjoy the talents we have here at the University.”

Some of the other events include a special screening of 'UN' by students of the University's BA Perfformio course. As a collection of original songs, the music was composed by Eilir Owen Griffiths, BA Perfformio course director, and the lyrics were written by the poet, Gruffudd Eifion Owen.

To conclude the celebrations, Canolfan S4C yr Egin, is extremely excited about the first ever Adventure Film Festival that will be held online at the beginning of March.

The festival is a celebration of outdoor films that inspire, showcase the wonders of nature and of course get the adrenaline pumping. It will be an opportunity to watch films from Wales and other amazing places and hear from those in front and behind the camera. The weekend will have panel sessions with experienced adventure filmmakers sharing tips and tricks, a chance to see short films by up and coming young makers and all you have to do is sit back and enjoy the view!

Visit the ‘Pethau Bychain’ page on the university's website to see the full programme.
