DVLA colleagues achieve first class honours from UWTSD

Two colleagues from the DVLA have graduated with first class honours in Applied Computing from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD).
Robert James and Kevin Moses both achieved BSc degrees in Applied Computing after studying part-time at the university. Robert was also awarded Best Research Prize by the university for his work designing a single user interface and modern user experience for staff at the DVLA.
Dr Nik Whitehead, Associate Professor in the School of Applied Computing said: “Rob undertook a fantastic project that was really relevant to his workplace and allowed him to showcase his skills not only to us here at the university but also to his employers as well.”
Robert said he was able to use his learning to benefit his job.
“People say it must be hard studying and working but I've found aside from doing my assignments in the evening and weekends, it's been invaluable to bring my learning back in to work and apply it to my day job,” he added.
“The DVLA has provided a lot of support for us throughout - from colleagues supporting our learning through to being given time to revise for and attend exams.
“I’m absolutely chuffed to have won the research prize. To get this on top of passing my degree is fantastic.”
Kevin said his studies have been hugely beneficial for his job.
“While it's great to have the qualification under my belt, it's the ability to apply what I've learned in a real-world situation that has helped me in my current role and will continue to do so,” he added. “It feels absolutely amazing to get a first. To see that pay off at the end is a great feeling.”
Course director Beverley Holland is hugely proud of both students’ achievements.
“Their marks have been consistently amazingly high in every module of their studies,” she said. “They reflected all their learning back to the workplace and brought some of the new things going on at the DVLA back into our department, so there was excellent two-way traffic. When they did their final year project, they built up an excellent rapport with project supervisors and were able to bring their workplace into their project. We as a team are delighted they came out with firsts – we didn’t expect anything less because they are excellent learners who really embraced and enjoyed part time study. As they were the first of now many students from the DVLA it’s wonderful to see them achieve such excellent grades.”
