Getting Ready for the Off-Site Revolution

Getting Ready for the Offsite Revolution, UWTSD has welcomed the Wernick Group to the University’s Construction Wales Innovation Centre (CWIC) to deliver a guest lecture  through the CITB Offsite Ready project, to staff and students, as part of a major training programme to help grow best practice and skills in off-site construction.

The OffSite Ready project, which is funded by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), will be officially launched next month (April) and will offer a range of free-to-access online learning resources and face-to-face training events intended to build capacity in the UK education and skills system, and ensure universities, partner colleges and training providers are well placed to respond to the growth in off-site construction in the UK.

OffSite Ready will directly engage with employers, training providers, contractors, educational bodies and leading innovation organisations across the construction industry.

The presentation from Wernick’s Andy King and Kevin Lewis was entitled ‘Getting ready for the Off-Site Revolution’ and was preceded by a presentation from UWTSD Senior Lecturer Lindsay Richards about the Modern Methods of Construction.

Lindsay Richards, Project Director for Offsite Ready at the Construction Wales Innovation Centre, said: “It has been fantastic to give staff and students an opportunity to experience the advantages of off-site manufacturing and to embrace modern methods of construction through our structured day with Wernick. We are so grateful to Andy King and Kevin Lewis of Wernicks for sharing their knowledge and experience. We are aware that greater collaborative partnering is required between all construction professionals to accomplish an effective ‘off-site manufacturing’ strategy in the UK and what a better place to start than with the Construction professionals of the future at UWTSD!”

Kevin Lewis, Wernick’s Regional Sales Manager said: "The Offsite Ready Project ties in with our business strategy to educate about off-site construction and also develop close links with local education outlets. Students were fully engaged throughout and it was a pleasure to take them around factory to see face to face how our buildings are manufactured.”

CWIC has partnered with the Construction Scotland Innovation Centre (CSIC) for the purpose of securing CITB funding to train the next generation of off site construction workers.  Topics covered in the programme include – design functions, procurement functions, cost management, project and site management, onsite logistics and assembly, and follow on and upstream trades.

Up to 600 trainers will be upskilled in the materials across three nations, alongside an outreach programme in secondary schools and with teachers.

CWIC has been involved in the project’s development and along with its pan-Wales partners (Spokes) will be delivering this exciting and informative programme throughout Wales for the next 8 months.

The Wernick Group of companies is one of Britain’s largest independent manufacturer and hirer of portable and modular accommodation.
