Dan Rowbotham New co-ordinator appointed at Yr Atom

Dan graduated from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in 2016 with a degree in BA Performance before being appointed President of the Trinity Saint David Students' Union Group. During his final year at university, Dan was the National President of the Urdd and was the winner of the 2016 Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Merêd Award.

For the past two years he has been supporting the work of the Madog Centre for Welsh Studies at the University of Rio Grande, Ohio. During that time, he taught Welsh in schools and led on various community projects to celebrate the area's Welsh heritage. At the same time, he was also pursuing an MA degree in Education: Integrated Arts (M.Ed. Integrate Arts.)

Starting in his new role at Atom, Dan said:

"I'm really looking forward to leading on the work at yr Atom - it's a great facility in Carmarthen town centre.

We hope to continue to attract visitors and users to the centre and build on what is already here. It is vital that we foster and develop partnerships across the town in order to promote the use of the Welsh language and attract new visitors and users, as well as our friends who have supported us over the last five years.

I really hope I have the opportunity to welcome you to the Atom soon and if you have any ideas for the future or want to organise an activity or event here, then have a chat and a cuppa!"

Yr Atom was officially opened in October 2015 after the University of Wales Trinity Saint David purchased the building with the support of a grant from the Welsh Government's Capital Investment Fund, to establish a Welsh Centre in Carmarthen. This historic building was purchased on King Street and the University went on to transform it to include a café and various rooms to host social, leisure and business events for the whole community.

"The University is eagerly looking forward to the further development of yr Atom under Dan's leadership," said Gwilym Dyfri Jones, Provost of Carmarthen Campus, University of Wales Trinity Saint David and the person who led the work to establish the centre on King Street.

“A former student and past president of the University Students' Union, Dan is a popular individual whose passion for the Welsh language and culture is infectious. I know that he has some exciting ideas about developing yr Atom for the future and we look forward to supporting him so that he can realise his vision and thus strengthen the place of the Welsh language in the daily life of Carmarthen.” added Gwilym Dyfri Jones.

Carys Ifan, Director of Canolfan S4C yr Egin, who has strategic and operational responsibility for Yr Atom, noted:

“I am delighted that we have appointed Dan Rowbotham as the Coordinator at yr Atom and look forward to working with him.

“We want to see Carmarthen become a truly bilingual town with yr Atom becoming the focus for the Welsh language in the town. Dan’s role is key as we strive to achieve that goal.

Atom's presence has already had a positive impact on other organisations and businesses within the town as we work towards making the language more visible and audible in Carmarthen."
