Sisters both graduate with firsts in computing from UWTSD

Sisters Helen Frey and Julie Millard are celebrating graduating with first class honours BSc degrees in Computing (Computer Networks and Cybersecurity) from the University in Wales Trinity Saint David in Swansea. They are among four women who successfully completed the traditionally male-dominated course this year – and they say they would encourage other women to join the course.
The sisters were inspired to enrol on the course by Julie’s son Chris, who graduated with a BSc in Computer Networks in 2017. They started as part-time students, balancing their studies with work, and later moved on to the full-time course, completing their studies in four years.
“I am elated to have achieved a first,” said Julie. “The reason I choose the course is because computers have become an integral part of ever-day life. The course was both challenging and rewarding. Having my sister on the same course was a definite advantage: we supported each other by encouraging each other to stay positive.”
Helen agreed that studying together was a plus point. “It was an interesting experience but luckily, we enjoy each other's company well enough to stick together for the three years,” she said. “We gave each other moral support during the tough times.
“I find cyber security and computer forensics fascinating and with the opportunity of using a hands-on approach in networking and cyber security this was the best course for me. I am over the moon with the results and I couldn't have done it without such amazing lecturers.”
Julie added: “I would encourage any female to take the course to further their career.”
Julie is now planning to complete the CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker) and CHFI (Certified Hacking Forensic Investigator) qualifications, while Helen is enrolled on a PGCE with UWTSD to teach IT.
“The degree course was a great experience and I would highly recommend it to everyone, male and female alike,” she said. “I enjoyed the diversity of the course, which gave me an understanding of many technical disciplines.”
The sisters’ tutor Carlene Campbell is delighted with their achievement.
“They were very serious about their studies and showed maturity, focus, determination and willpower,” she says. “They did not take their studies for granted. I am very proud of them both. I am confident that the knowledge and experience gained, along with their work ethic, will be an asset to any industry or even their own business, depending on the path chosen after graduation. I am sure they have paved the way for other female to do likewise and excel in a similar way.”
Course director Beverley Holland added:
“Helen and Julie brought a huge amount of energy and commitment to their studies. They knew what they wanted to do and got so involved and engaged with the course: they were on campus helping other students and took part in open days. It’s excellent that they got firsts – it reflects their phenomenal commitment to study.”
