Swansea College of Art graduate paints tribute to Covid-19 patients & NHS heroes
23.07.2020
UWTSD Swansea College of Art graduate Caitlin Noble has painted a mural at the city’s Morriston Hospital which symbolises hope for patients battling Covid-19 and pays tribute the front-line NHS staff caring for them.
Caitlin, was commissioned by the hospital to create the mural after Unit Manager Deb Lewis heard about her work from fellow pottery artist Phil Hughes, who had previously been Deb’s art teacher.
Caitlin said: “The inspiration behind this painting is the idea of a “positivity tree”, the imagery is based on themes of growth, support, and respect. The grounded trunk forms a sturdy support, the abstract blossom and simple outlined wildlife represents patients that are affected by coronavirus pandemic. The blue poppies gathered around the trunk of the tree pay respect and give thanks to the NHS workers.
“This design was also inspired by the imagery of the classic “tree of life” symbolic of personal growth, strength and beauty. I have cherished the opportunity to be able to give something back to my community.”
Katherine Clewett, Programme Director, Cert HE Art and Design Foundation said: “We are delighted that Caitlin’s work can be showcased in this way. Caitlin's work considers the “human condition”- what this is, how it works, and how it can be explored through art. She is interested in the connections between human emotion, attitude and behaviour - and how these could explain current world issues such as climate change, civil wars, and more recently the global coronavirus pandemic. Caitlin has demonstrated an intuitive empathy which is evident in the sensitivity of her approach to the development and realisation of her concept.”
An exceptional student, Caitlin has just successfully completed her Certificate of HE: Art & Design Foundation at Swansea College of Art. The Foundation course is an introduction to study within art and design, a foundation or basis for students entering ‘art school’.
Katherine added: “On the Foundation course we encourage and support a dialogue between artists, students, and the community. This opportunity for Caitlin to exhibit her work in the local community provides a platform where students and artists can share ideas and contemplate how work reaches the viewer.”
Deb Lewis, Morriston Hospital Director said: “We were over the moon when Caitlin agreed to do this piece of work for us. Her initial designs were stunning and the finished article is absolutely beautiful. We are so grateful to Caitlin for donating this to Morriston Hospital.”
