Students and tutors from University of Wales Trinity Saint David have returned from a 14 day field trip to Qatar, Malaysia and Singapore.

The group, which included Masters, MBA and final year undergraduate students studying business and international travel and tourism qualifications, took off from Wales’ national airport thanks to Qatar Airways, bound for Doha, to embark on their exciting itinerary.

On arrival in Kuala Lumpur, the students visited University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s sister university – the International University of Malaya Wales and a wealth of cultural and tourist landmarks across Malaysia, before heading to Singapore.

Jacqui Jones, Programme Director for International Travel, Tourism & Leisure Management at UWTSD said: “Every year we work hard to make the UWTSD Tourism on Tour academic global adventure even better. This year International Travel, Tourism & Events were joined by MBA & Adventure Film students & the trip included Qatar as well as Malaysia & Singapore.

“It was an amazing trip which was truly a voyage of discovery for the students. They were able to apply their academic studies whilst seeing behind the scenes in some of the world leading tourism organisations. It was amazing to see them come together as a group, becoming so much more confident & culturally aware.”

The students enjoyed an excellent presentation from the Welsh Government Country Manager in Doha, Suzanne Golding-Lynch as well as a visit and presentation at the luxury Ritz Carlton Hotel, with which the University has a long standing relationship. This was followed by a Desert Safari in 4X4’s.

In Kuala Lumpur, the students attended presentations & cultural activities at International University of Malaya Wales led by the Vice Chancellor & student council, followed by a visit to the Malaysian Tourism Ministry for a traditional culture show. The group enjoyed an action packed week visiting Melaka UNESCO World Heritage City, Mosques, Festival Caves, temples and the Responsible Tourism Elephant Sanctuary. Finally the group experienced an inspirational presentation and tour of AirAsia Corporate HQ before flying with Air Asia on to Penang.

Jacqui added: “During their stay in Penang the students were able to make the most of a couple of days off to experience a variety of adventure tourism activities. Whilst on the island they also had an excellent tour & presentation at the iconic Eastern & Oriental Hotel & fundraising to buy tiles to help restore the roof of the beautiful Kek Lok Si Temple.

“On the way home the group stopped over in Singapore where they took the cable car to Sentosa Island to see the jungle & tourist developments, experience the airport’s themed attractions, Marina Bay Sands & Gardens by the Bay light shows. Finally the group visited the exclusive & recently refurbished Raffles Hotel the home of the original Singapore Sling cocktail.

“The trip was organised in close consultation with Qatar Airways flying from Cardiff Airport. In the lead up to the trip the airline supported students in their studies and with tours of the airport and operational presentations. The group were all thrilled on the return journey to experience guest service excellence when it was one of the student’s birthdays and the cabin crew presented her with flowers and chocolates and the group with champagne! A fantastic finale to a wonderful trip.”

Jayne Miller, Leisure / Corporate Sales – Wales and South West at Qatar Airways said: “Thank you to Jacqui, the tourism students and the team at UWTSD, for choosing to use Qatar Airways from Cardiff Airport for their tourism on tour academic trip to Doha and Malaysia. It was great to see the students off at the airport and their enthusiasm for learning about our award-winning airline. This has only strengthened our relationship and will lead to more opportunities working together. I wish the students the very best in their studies and look forward to working with Jacqui and the team at UWTSD.”
