UWTSD and Gwent Police collaborate to develop new teaching qualification route to support skills development of officers
29.07.2020
A new collaboration between UWTSD and Gwent Police will give officers the opportunity to upskill by studying for a Professional Certificate in Education and Training (PCET).
The partnership involves the creation of a new distance learning version of the part-time PCET to support police trainers, as well as other professions, to obtain a teaching qualification for the post-16 sector in a flexible, learning environment.
Full and part-time PCET programmes provide innovative and high-quality training and education designed to help those from many disciplines to obtain a teaching qualification for the post-16 sector.
The programmes aim to provide opportunities to develop confidence and skills to apply basic principles of adult learning in different contexts.
Both programmes include a combination of university-based tuition and experiential practical teaching in the workplace, to provide a holistic and broad programme of study.
The first cohort to study the new distance learning programme, started in June and are being supported in their teaching practice by qualified colleagues as well as UWTSD staff.
Student Michael Griffiths said: “I’m really looking forward to starting a new challenge with the University Of Wales Trinity Saint David having enrolled with the new PCET programme.
“This will be a new personal challenge having not previously studied at university and is a good opportunity for my continuous professional development.
“I am really looking forward to learning about the principles of teaching and developing professional practice.”
Caroline Lewis, Assistant Academic Director at the University’s Institute of Education and Humanities said: “At UWTSD we have a well-established history of training teachers for the post-compulsory sector and are delighted to be working with Gwent Police in this exciting new opportunity.
“The programme will allow for the upskilling of police officers as well as other professionals to help them obtain their teaching qualification in a manner that fits with their demanding job roles.
“We are very much looking forward to working with the first cohort of officers about to start their learning journey with us.”
Sergeant Jason Rowe, Gwent Police’s manager for the police education qualifications framework (PEQF), said: “This bespoke online qualification is the first of its kind and showcases the innovative, problem-solving and collaborative approach taken by the force and the university to upskill our staff.
“It is designed to provide police trainers with a qualification in education and training, aiding their own personal development, in accordance with best practice.
“I am excited by the prospects of the collaboration between UWTSD and Gwent Police and looking forward to hearing about the successes of the students in the future.”
Bronwen Williams, Academic Director at UWTSD’s Institute of Management and Health added: “This is another excellent example of the collaboration between UWTSD and Gwent Police. UWTSD are the Higher Education provider for the Police Degree Apprenticeship for Gwent Police. We are delighted to be working with them on this additional project.”
