Jo Ashburner, a Surface Pattern Design graduate from University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) and boss of Red Dragon Manufacturing Flagmakers, has launched a new campaign to fund the production and supply of scrubs for frontline workers in the NHS.

Jo Ashburner, a Surface Pattern Design graduate from University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) and founder of Red Dragon Manufacturing Flagmakers, has launched a new campaign to fund the production and supply of scrubs for frontline workers in the NHS.

Red Dragon Flagmakers is a social mission business based in Clydach that specialises in the production of custom flags for films, television, festivals, castles, councils both in the UK and Worldwide. Their flags appear in the Downton Abbey movie, Netflix’s The Crown series, Sex Education, the Les Miserables movie, TV’s Vanity Fair, Endeavour and more.  Jo is a successful social entrepreneur and often returns to UWTSD to share her expertise and skills with current students to inspire them to set up their own businesses.

As with many other small businesses, the Covid19 pandemic has had a negative impact on the Red Dragon Flagmakers order book which in turn has mobilised the team to look at how to diversify their manufacturing capability during these challenging months. Jo and her team have linked up with Welsh Government supply chains to produce textile goods for the NHS, Council and care home workers. To help cover the costs of the materials and deliveries, they have launched Scrubs for Wales via a Go Fund Me campaign. All the money raised goes directly towards the cost of production and getting these vital items to where they are most needed.

Jo Ashburner said: “We are doing everything we can to make sure our staff have an income and something to live on, many have come from marginalised backgrounds and are currently working on a mixture of paid or voluntary hours in a concerted effort to get as many scrubs out to where they are needed most. We are passionate about supporting our staff and what we do – this is a way we can diversify and use our business as a force for good. But we need some financial help to enable this.”

Kathryn Penaluna, Enterprise Manager at UWTSD said: “Jo is an example of how a former student has injected enterprise and entrepreneurial thinking into everything she does. Not only has she built a successful business, she has also created one with a fantastic social mission. We are very proud of what she has achieved, and I know our current students look up to her and learn from her experiences. We are lucky to have such a successful business in Swansea and it is important for us all to support it.”
