During the Coronavirus lockdown, UWTSD’s Philosophy department has been hosting weekly online Philosophy Café sessions, led by globally renowned Emeritus Professor Chris Norris.

The online Philosophy Café has been an opportunity to bring postgraduate students together in order to exchange philosophical ideas and to encourage debate.  Postgraduate from UWTSD’s Philosophy, Literary Theory and Creative Courses have welcomed the opportunity to meet online and to discuss their views with Emeritus Professor Norris. One of those students is Martyn Sampson.  He commented:

"The Philosophy Café is a unique space in that discussion of any topic is possible. Topics are chosen week to week, and, indeed, in the course of the sessions themselves, as conversational threads are pursued wherever they may lead. Chris has a polymathic knowledge of philosophy and the humanities in general, and is endlessly generous and supportive in encouraging students to express their thoughts. Discussions are different from those in conventional seminars in that the critical framework employed is more flexible than that which might be ordinarily applied, while being nonetheless rigorous. I hope you will drop by—you would be made most welcome."

Emeritus Professor Chris Norris

Emeritus Professor Christopher Norris is a distinguished Research Professor in Philosophy and is the author of more than thirty books on aspects of philosophy and literary theory.  His current main interest is in the relationship between philosophy and poetry, including the idea of verse as a way of addressing philosophical themes.

The online Philosophy Café was set up by Dr Rebekah Humphreys, Lecturer of Philosophy at UWTSD’s Lampeter campus.  She added:

“We are very lucky to have the globally renowned Emeritus Professor Chris Norris running this online Philosophy Café for our Philosophy, Literary Theory and Creative Writing postgraduates.  Even though it’s all happening online our students are really enjoying it.  It’s wonderful for our research students and our MA students to have the opportunity to have an informal philosophical discussion with somebody of his stature in the field.

During these challenging times it’s important to bring our students together in this way and, I must say, we’ve had some wonderful philosophical discussions over the last few months!”
