As part of the Motorsport & Automotive Engineering courses taught at UWTSD, the University offers hands on practical experience through its student led race teams. One of these is the MSportEng team, which runs a 1.6 Duratec MCR in the Creative Funding Solutions Sports 2000 Championship. The team has been participating in this Championship for over 5 years. The championship is comprised of 25 minute sprint races and 50 minute endurance races. A range of circuits are visited including Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Oulton Park and Donnington Park.

On Saturday, January 18, the Creative Funding Solutions Sports 2000 Championship held its annual Dinner and Dance event. During the evening, awards are presented to the championship winners amongst others. One of the awards presented was for ‘Mechanic of the Year’, and the championship committee awarded this to the students from UWTSD. It was awarded for not only the work they do on their own vehicle but also the community spirit they had shown during the season to other competitors. This had included working late into the evening helping a fellow racer repair and rebuild their vehicle to enable them to take part in the race the next day. The committee mentioned how this attitude and willingness had been grateful appreciated throughout the paddock and had really helped to integrate the team within the championship.

George Jones, who was the team leader for the 2019 season and is in his final year of his BEng Motorsport Engineering degree, said: “I am delighted for the University to receive this award, particularly after such a challenging season for us. A huge effort has been put in to prepare our car for each race and the team has always gone above and beyond to support fellow competitors across the paddock. It’s been a great pleasure to be a part of such an inspiring group of people and I look forward to the next season of racing at UWTSD.”

This season was particularly challenging for the team who had to deal with a number of mechanical issues. However, they worked hard to solve these issues at the race track where possible or back in the Automotive Workshop at the University’s SA1 Campus.

Tim Tudor, Senior Lecturer and Programme Manager for BEng Motorsport Engineering Courses, started the MSportEng team nearly 10 years ago and has seen the team progress to where it is today. Tim said: “It was fantastic to see the students’ hard work and enthusiasm recognised by the Sports Racing Car Club and I am extremely proud of the students’ sportsmanship and willing to help competitors in the series. The students have conducted themselves professionally all year and I am confident all members will go on to further success within the industry. The project was developed to provide practical experience to supplement the theoretical knowledge delivered by our courses and the opportunity for students to work with the experience in the paddock on a range of vehicles is extremely valuable.”
