Face visors made by a UWTSD team have been delivered to schools across Swansea in readiness for pupils’ return on June 29.

The child-friendly visors have been delivered to Dunvant, Cila, Waunarlwydd and Bishopston primaries, as well as Bishop Gore and Pentrehafod Comprehensives and feature artwork by former UWTSD Graphic Design student Brogan Evans.

The UWTSD team, led by Dr Ross Head, have been using the facilities at Swansea College of Art to produce the visors and have already supplied many to businesses and care homes across the region.

They have been working long hours laser cutting and assembling these vital face visors to help address any gaps in the supply of PPE.

Dr Head, Design Manager of the Cerebra Innovation Centre in the Wales Institute for Science and Art at UWTSD said: “I have been really happy to be involved in making visors to help the care sector, businesses and schools. It has helped give people confidence in returning to work and it has been great to be doing something that makes a difference to people’s lives. With great thanks to my small but dedicated team who have made this possible, and especially to Brogan Evans who designed the beautiful graphics to make child friendly visors, which should be much less intimidating to children as they begin to venture out.”

Brogan said: “It was such a pleasure to be asked to help the wonderful team at UWTSD. They are doing such a kind, selfless task and I am just thrilled I could help. I have been so grateful watching the key workers work tirelessly to help everybody for months and as a designer / illustrator I have felt a bit useless sat in my studio. I feel very lucky that I have been able to help make important protective equipment a little less scary for young children.”

Professor Ian Walsh, Provost of UWTSD Swansea, said: “As part of our civic mission, UWTSD is committed to working with partners to build a strong and vibrant Swansea. During the coronavirus crisis Dr Head has put his design management skills to good use by pulling together a team of volunteers to manufacture thousands of visors for key workers.”
