UWTSD’s Dr Liz Walder and Ian Standen RIBA Programme Manager from the School of Architecture at the University’s Wales Institute of Science and Art (WISA) will be taking part in an online event entitled Designing Out Suicide which is being hosted by The Jordan Legacy CIC on Friday, April 30th at 1pm-3pm.

The discussion panel event will be hosted by Dr Liz Walder and will take place via Zoom. With an expert panel line-up including leading UK architects, surveyors, and the Construction Industry Council, to those involved in helping to prevent suicides in the built environment, almost 200 people have registered to attend this event, from organisations such as; Highways England, Network Rail, various Government offices and police forces, design firms, architects, surveyors, mental health professionals/consultants and others who have an interest in the topic of suicide prevention.

Dr Walder, a visiting lecturer in Architecture at WISA is the National Lead on Research & Strategy for the Design Out Suicide initiative for The Jordan Legacy.

Dr Walder, who is also an Affiliate Member of Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) said: “As National Lead on Research & Strategy for the Jordan Legacy, I believe that raising awareness of Design Out Suicide within the formal legislation of the UK Building Regulations is a key aspiration. This is an issue that I am raising through my advocacy work with the devolved planning inspectorates in the UK.

“The COVID19 pandemic has led to an increase in seeking improved health and wellness in terms of environment and behaviours. In 2021, we are now increasingly aware of our surroundings and we should take advantage of the creativity that we, as designers and architects have, to reduce the risk of suicide within the built environment.

“Our “live” design project for students within the mental health field, Bronwen’s Wish, is being run by Ian Standen, Senior Lecturer at the recently RIBA-validated School of Architecture* at UWTSD and we hope that this scheme will become part of an early stage toolkit for other practising architects, designing within the field of mental health.”
