Top grades in Mandarin GCSE for UWTSD Confucius Institute Chinese School

On GCSE results day 2021, 11 students from UWTSD’s Confucius Institute Chinese School are celebrating their excellent grades. 

The students achieved 100% A* to B grades, with the majority attaining A*.  Against the background of pressure and disruption of learning due to the Covid-19 restrictions during 2020-2021, the students nonetheless put every effort into achieving top grades.

Since first offering Mandarin Chinese GCSE three years ago the Confucius Institute Chinese school students have consistently passed with flying colours. The school first opened in September 2016 offering Chinese language tuition at weekends to children from all backrounds, but in particular, supporting education for Chinese community of South Wales.   The aims of the school are to provide the highest quality tuition in Chinese to prepare children for the globalised world of work, while also maintaining links with their cultural and linguistic heritage.

In September 2020 the Chinese school  started to offer A Level Chinese classes and has a strong cohort of young people preparing to take the advanced qualification in summer 2022.

Mrs Liu Jing is the Chinese School’s GCSE and A Level tutor. She commented that students have given her very positive feedback about the courses. Student Xie Sitong said: "Classes this year have been great even with the disruption of Covid-19. I have learnt a lot of new skills in class for example the history of Chinese festivals, how to expand my writing and how to read and write new words and phrases."
