Academics from the discipline of Psychology and Counselling have contributed to a new book addressing the global mental health challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, due to be released later this month.

The book, ‘The Covid-19 Pandemic: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Managing Mental Health Challenges’ addresses challenges faced by individuals, mental health practitioners, and educators across the world.

In their chapter examining the effects on students in Higher Education across the world Dr Paul Hutchings, Associate Professor in Psychology and Assistant Academic Director of UWTSD’s Centre for Psychology & Counselling, and Katie Sullivan, Lecturer and Technical Tutor in the Centre for Psychology and Counselling, address a number of issues faced by students. These include access to employment, digital poverty, prejudice and discrimination towards international students, and loss.

Dr Hutchings said: “When students are mentioned in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic people automatically focus upon their studies and how they are impacted. However, students are also members of society and face the same issues as non-students; their ability to work and earn has been impacted, they and members of their families may have been subject to illness. In addition there have been increased cases of negative rhetoric and behaviours towards some cultural groups across the world, and this has been experienced by international students in a number of countries. In our chapter we address the steps that can be taken to support students, not just in their studies but in the wider context of the difficulties that they may face in their society.”
