UWTSD showcases creative talent at Swansea Christmas Parade 2021
24.11.2021
The creative talents of students, staff, and community partners at The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) came alive with the help of a little Christmas magic on Sunday, November 21.
A float designed and made by students at UWTSD’s Swansea College of Art and the University’s Cerebra Innovation Centre joined the procession at the Swansea Christmas Parade and Lights Switch On.
UWTSD will celebrate its bicentennial in 2022, marking the establishment of St David’s College, Lampeter in 1822 as the birthplace of higher education in Wales. The float, piled high with real-life gifts, also featured the university’s new bicentenary logo in readiness for next year’s events and celebrations.
The float was accompanied by the Troy Boyz performers, a UWTSD supported initiative that helps to inspire and engage youngsters aged 16-19, who have experienced challenging lives, through the medium of street dance, music, and performance.
Paper lanterns created by student volunteers and staff at Blaenymaes drop-in centre, a not-for-profit organisation that helps individuals and families, illuminated the procession.
The University had also invited friends and members of the Swansea City of Sanctuary to walk alongside the float to welcome in the Christmas festivities.
UWTSD has a long record of working with refugees and asylum seekers through its collaborative partnership with The Swansea City of Sanctuary Group, delivering workshops and support in local communities.
Professor Ian Walsh, Provost of UWTSD’s Swansea campus said: “UWTSD is proud to be Swansea’s city centre university and a partner with the City Council and Swansea BID in the transformational changes taking place to enhance Swansea’s status as one of the UK’s premier waterfront cities and an attractive destination for students from across the world.
“Together with our community partners, we were delighted to be able to take part in this special festive event, to showcase the creative talents of not only our students and partners, but everyone involved.”
After the parade, Dr Ross Head, Associate Professor and Design Manager at UWTSD's Cerebra Innovation Centre, took the trees to Dunvant Primary School, so they could be used as part of the school's Christmas events.
Mrs Rimmer, art and creative lead for the school said: "They are amazing and will really brighten the place up. We can put them to great use this year and next year."
