A BA International Leisure Resort Management student from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David has recently represented The Institute of Hospitality (IOH) Student Committee at an event in the Shard, London.

Joshua Wilson attended the ‘Above and Beyond at The Shangri-La, the Shard, London’ event as the Vice-Chair of the IOH Cymru Student Committee in Wales.

This was IOH’s first live event since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of the event was to interact with hospitality professionals and network with people in attendance, so connections could be made.

Joshua said: “I liaised with industry leaders and got to connect with a wide range of people. One had been a butler working with the Royal Family - it was fascinating to learn more about the general roles and experiences involved.”

The event also highlighted the importance of hospitality and why it needs to thrive, especially after the devastating impact of the pandemic.

“What I have taken away from this event is that how much I have missed this industry. The COVID-19 Pandemic took away hospitality and face-to-face interaction for 2020 and most of 2021. This was hugely damaging. However, instead of looking at the past and the repercussions it has caused, we need to look to the future, and the greatness that is yet to come.”

Joshua was fortunate enough to meet the Chief Executive of the IOH too and learnt that events such as these will gain him experience and confidence within the hospitality industry that will lead to future opportunities.

“Every time I attend one of these events, it develops me even more as a person. You always learn something new every day, which links in exactly to hospitality. The qualities that I once had when I was sixteen has been heightened to a major extent now, as I approach my 20th Birthday. My knowledge and expertise within this sector through lectures and practical elements of experience are now maximised greatly, as my university has supported me immensely.”

As well as being the Vice -chair of the Student IOH Committee, Joshua is also a Student Ambassador for the University, and a Student Representative for his course. He looks forward to sharing his experiences with fellow students as a way to develop the hospitality industry.

Jacqui Jones, Programme Manager of the Tourism and Events Portfolio said:

“Joshua Wilson is an outstanding 2nd year International Leisure Resort Management student who has just been appointed vice Chair of the Institute of Hospitality Cymru's new Student Committee. He is an excellent student who makes the most of all the exciting opportunities available through his studies. Recently Josh took up the opportunity to take part in a prestigious Institute of Hospitality Event hosted at the Shard where he was able to meet with industry leaders from across the country.”
