UWTSD has a long record of working with refugees and asylum seekers and is currently applying for University of Sanctuary status which will enable refugees and asylum seekers to access free education and support during their studies.
Caroline Thraves, Academic Director Art & Media said: “We are delighted to be able to offer these workshops as part of adult learners’ week in partnership with The Quadrant. Swansea College of Art (UWTSD) has always attracted large numbers of adult learners drawn to the joys of studying creative arts. We hope that by hosting this event at the Quadrant Shopping Centre we will be able to bring this joy to many others.”
Catherine Hammerton, Surface Pattern Design lecturer added: “Our Surface Pattern and Textile programme thrives on a dynamic approach to image making; translated through a wealth of hand rendering alongside cutting edge digital technologies. We foster a diverse learning community to create beautiful artwork, in your own style, for exciting design driven outcomes. We look forward to sharing some of our skills with the community of Swansea, as part of Adult Learners Week.”
Lisa Hartley, Quadrant Shopping Centre Manager, said: “We are passionate about supporting the arts at the Quadrant and it is a pleasure to welcome UWTSD during Adult Learners Week. We have such a large, accessible city centre space for workshops like this to take place and we hope our shoppers will take full advantage of the brilliant opportunities offered by the university.”
Two workshops will be on offer on September 21
Workshop 1:
Post Garden Mini Collages (Surface Pattern and Textiles)
Create your own cut and collaged floral fantasy, an abundant summertime paper garden, perfectly composed on a postcard to send a friend, or loved one (if you can bear to part with it!)
Celebrate the joys of lo tech image making techniques, through the lens of an ultra-contemporary eye for trends, and forward-looking alignment to surface pattern and textile design processes. Image making is the first step taken in the design process associated with the diverse multi-disciplinary areas of surface pattern and textiles; fashion, interiors, stationery, designer maker.
Workshop 2:
Make a Statement! Typography and Stenciling (Graphic Design and Fine Art)
Armed with words and images, skills, and imagination, use collage, print and/or stenciling techniques to create a bold statement postcard or printed canvas bag. No drawing expertise is required for this workshop.
The workshops are relaxed and informal with all materials provided. During the sessions we will cut, collage, or stencil our postcards while we chat about lifelong learning opportunities at UWTSD.
Places can be pre-booked, or just call in on the day when drop-in sessions will be offered on a first come first served basis.
All materials will be provided and no previous training in Art & Design is required.
