UWTSD's Professor Uzo Iwobi and Academic Director Caroline Thraves to select work for Swansea Open 2021
07.10.2021
UWTSD Honorary Fellow Professor Uzo Iwobi, OBE and Swansea College of Art Academic director Caroline Thraves have been named as the selectors of this year’s Swansea Open 2021.
Swansea’s Glynn Vivian has announced the welcome return of the annual celebration of art and craft event by artists and makers who live and work in the city and county of Swansea.
The exhibition is open to all living and working in SA1-SA9, both artists and makers with professional backgrounds and others who, without formal study, have discovered the pleasures and challenges that are the rewards of creative activity.
The selection is made by a different panel of invited selectors each year, thus encouraging diverse viewpoints annually. The invited selectors this year are Caroline Thraves, Academic Director for Art, and Media at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (Swansea College of Art) and Professor Uzo Iwobi OBE currently a Specialist Policy Adviser on Equalities to Welsh Government and Founder of Race Council Cymru.
Professor Iwobi said: “I am absolutely delighted to be a part of Swansea Open. It is an exciting opportunity to work with other art enthusiasts to select works that tell stories and showcase the richness and diversity artists bring into their work. We are looking for unique pieces that will be viewed by all visitors who visit the Glynn Vivian. I have no doubt that the works will draw crowds to this wonderful Art Gallery in the centre of our city. This is a very exciting opportunity, and I am looking forward to being a part of this initiative.”
Caroline Thraves said: “I am delighted to be to take part in the selection of work for the Swansea Open. The city is thriving with creative talent, many of whom have studied at Swansea College of Art (UWTSD). It is going to be a joy selecting the finalists.”
The works will be on display at the gallery until January 30, 2022, with many of the works for sale as part of the exhibition.
