Canolfan Tir Glas hosts lecture to celebrate International Women’s Day

Jane Powell will be the guest speaker delivering the lecture ‘Food, Women and Community’ which will explore this very concept. Jane is active in community food projects in Aberystwyth and a coordinator of the Wales Real Food and Farming Conference. While at the Organic Centre Wales in 2015 she helped lead an action research project called Food Values which looked at how food systems are shaped by the values that we hold.

Jane Powell said: "There is a distinct set of values that come to the fore in women's spaces, particularly to do with receptivity, care and listening. As traditional communities are being replaced with virtual ones, and our society is in danger of fragmenting, we need more of this warmth and connection. Food projects are a natural context for bringing people together and building a new culture."

The lecture is part of a series of events to celebrate the University’s bicentenary, as well as to highlight the Canolfan Tir Glas project on the Lampeter Campus.

UWTSD is offering an ambitious and bold vision for Lampeter and the vicinity. It’s a long-term scheme that relies, to a great extent, on local and national support. The hope is that the development will stimulate economic, social, and cultural activity in the area and inject new life and energy into the town.

The University intends to see Canolfan Tir Glas maintaining an eco-system in the area that will support rural infrastructure and act as a catalyst for the promotion of a resilient culture with a clear focus on food and hospitality. Sustainability and resilience will be at the core of the entire scheme, with these themes permeating through all its various components.

Hazel Thomas Canolfan Tir Glas Coordinator said: “Canolfan Tir Glas is delighted to host the International Women's Day lecture at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, Lampeter Campus with Jane Powell as the guest speaker.  Jane is active in community food projects in Aberystwyth as well as with the Welsh arm of the Permaculture Association, Paramaethu Cymru.
