Degree success for NHS employee returning to education after 30 years.

Christine Woods has worked in the NHS for nearly twenty years, starting as a medical records clerk and working her way up to data analyst for Medicines Management. Christine had completed the various NVQ’s that the health board had offered, but felt she needed more of a challenge. Despite being out of full-time education for thirty years, she embarked on the BSc (Hons) Computing (Data and Information Systems) and is graduating this year.

The modules of the degree have helped her to understand her current role in a different way, and although extremely hard work, Christine felt gratified when the results of these assessments were given, and she could see all the hard work had paid off. It was also a challenge to work with students who had no break in their education, and found the process less challenging as basic study skills did not come easily to Christine.

Gaynor Thomas, Senior Lecturer in Computing said “Christine is one of the first students to complete our Digital Degree Apprenticeship programme which is an excellent opportunity to study a degree while continuing in full-time work. Christine is an employee of the NHS/Digital Health and Care Wales. She enrolled on the apprenticeship programme in 2017 and since then has gone from strength to strength in improving her computing and data analysis skills. Her final year project was a study around improving care for C-difficile in the Swansea area. The skills she has developed will allow her to help make a real difference to patient care in the future. We are delighted that she is graduating with a well-deserved first-class honours degree.”

Christine said: “I would recommend this course mainly because of the commitment that the lecturers gave to us in often challenging circumstances. My plan now is to progress in my role using the skills I have. The course has helped me as it has proven that if you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything!."
