Digital skills courses offered through universities’ collaboration
23.05.2022
A number of fully-funded online digital skills courses are being offered thanks to a partnership between the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) and the University of South Wales (USW).
The collaboration has been funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) and will see a number of courses delivered online, with a certification of completion awarded after the learning is finished.
The first free course provides a basic introduction to digital skills, which lets the learners become confident and efficient while online. It includes guides to getting online, creating online accounts, setting up and using email, and searching the internet. Later courses will cover socialising and working with others online, basic word processing, and creating a CV.
James Cale, Director of Digital Services at UWTSD, said: “The ability to have basic digital skills has become essential to allow individuals to function and participate in an ever-increasing digital world. Shopping, banking, booking hospital appointments, and even paying for school lunches, are all done online and it’s vital that our communities are supported in doing these things confidently and safely.
“The courses – which are interactive, visual, and delivered in bite-sized chunks - are intended to have very broad appeal and be accessible to even the most inexperienced user.”
Claire Johnson, USW’s Partnerships and Outreach Manager (Digital and STEM), said the pandemic highlighted the vital importance of being confident online.
“If one thing the past few years has taught us, it’s that technology is an integral part of our lives,” she said. “The need for digital skills has never been greater as we work, socialise, and access core services through our electronic devices.
“For some people, however, a lack of digital skills can lead to serious isolation. In fact, Wales has one of the highest figures for digital poverty according to the Lloyds Bank Essential Digital Skills report.”
