03.05.2022

The Digital Services Team has celebrated the launch of its newly developed resources for staff and students, the DigiCentre, at the University's SA1 campus.

The innovative centre provides a gateway for staff and students to develop their digital skills utilising a range of tools, beginning with a self-assessment questionnaire to evaluate current digital skills levels and offering training and development resources to build and develop on those skills.

The innovative centre provides a gateway for staff and students to develop their digital skills utilising a range of tools, beginning with a self-assessment questionnaire to evaluate current digital skills levels and offering training and development resources to build and develop on those skills. There are recommended learning pathways in Moodle that participants can work through at their own pace and earn digital badges in any of the six competencies, as defined by JISC (the Joint Information Systems Committee).

This exciting new development for staff and students supports UWTSD’s Digital Strategy. James Cale, Director of Digital Services said: "As a university, we are committed to providing all our staff students with the best possible foundations for personal development. Is more essential now more than ever that staff and students are empowered with access to technologies, experiences, and learning opportunities to build the digital skills necessary for both the workplace and to fuel future opportunities and success to thrive in an increasingly hybrid, digital economy.

"Our DigiCentre resource will provide a sector leading approach to digital skills development, utilising best in class resources from Jisc, Microsoft and LinkedIn Learning to provide a structured approach to digital skills development. It will benefit both staff and students and help us deliver our ambitious Digital Strategy for the institution.”

As part of the initiative, the team will also be rolling out a staff development programme aimed at academic staff during May and June, this will cover areas related specifically to blended learning.  Similar programmes for students and for professional services will follow in the coming months. The programme includes input from a variety of Digital Services teams including IT Service Delivery, IT Systems & Infrastructure, Digital Creativity and Learning and the Library and Learning Resources.

Alison Harding, Executive Head of Library and Learning Resources said: "The core function of any library is in creating accessible learning opportunities for all. In the development of the DigiCentre we are building on this work, and in doing so driving the digital skills development of all our community. We aim to ensure that all can fulfil their potential however and wherever they decide to apply these key life skills”.

Access to the services offered and more information can be found on the DigiCentre’s new website UWTSD Digital Skills - UWTSD Digital SKills. The team can be contacted for further information at digitalskills@uwtsd.ac.uk
