Paper Horses is an important memoir of surviving coercive control for MA Creative Writing Graduate
31.03.2022
University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s (UWTSD) MA Creative Writing Graduate Julie Ann Rees’s personal journey of surviving coercive control has been published in a new book.
Julie says writing the publication has not only helped to process what happened to her – but hopes it will also help those caught in similar circumstances.
Paper Horses started life as Julie’s MA dissertation which she worked on with her course mentor Jenni Williams.
Julie, a library assistant at UWTSD said: “I have not always been a writer. I began my working life as a horse person which led to a love of classical riding and training to develop a deeper understanding and communication with horses. I still ride, but simply for pleasure, both mine and the horses.
“My writing journey began after graduating with a master’s degree in Creative Writing from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.
“After graduation I persevered with the book determined to finish it and get published. After a delay due to Covid it is finally published through Black Bee Books, a Welsh sister publishing company of Thunderpoint publishing Scotland.
“Writing a book is massive and I knew I had to do this, but old doubts and fears lurked on the periphery. I also had to decide if I wanted such a personal account of my life to be accessible to others.
“For some readers I hope they enjoy the writing and the story, for others who are experiencing similar circumstances, I hope they realise that they can get away, no matter how hard it seems at the time.”
The official launch will be at Cover-to-Cover Bookshop in Mumbles on April 2nd, 2022, at 2pm. Julie will also be appearing at the Llandeilo literary festival Saturday, April 23 at 3pm.
Julie also has a short story being published next month with Honno women’s press celebrating Welsh women writing crime and another story featured with American publisher Improbable Press in their Cryptids emerging silver volume anthology.
