Procession and Service in Swansea celebrates the beginning of higher education in Wales

On Friday, 24 June, the University of Wales Trinity Saint David held a procession through the city of Swansea from the Dynevor campus to St Mary’s Church to celebrate the University’s Bicentenary.

On Friday, 24 June, the University of Wales Trinity Saint David held a procession through the city of Swansea from the Dynevor campus to St Mary’s Church to celebrate the University’s Bicentenary.

The bicentenary commemorates the foundation of St David’s College Lampeter in 1822 when Bishop Thomas Burgess, Bishop of St Davids, laid the foundation stone which marked the beginning of higher education in Wales. The bicentenary offers the opportunity to celebrate the contribution that all the University’s campus across the region. 

The celebratory service was held in St Mary’s Church to acknowledge the contribution of the University’s Swansea campus to higher education in Wales, and to acknowledge the University’s historic contribution to Art and education and its commitment to the develop of technical and applied learning in science, technology and engineering.

The Service was officiated by the Revd Sam Aldred, Chaplain of the Swansea Campus with the The Rt Revd John Lomas, Bishop of Swansea and Brecon in attendance. 

Guests included the Mrs Louise Fleet, CStJ, JP, HM Lord Lieutenant for West Glamorgan, Mr Stephen Rogers, High Sheriff of West Glamorgan, the Lord Mayor of Swansea Councillor Mike Day, Swansea Councillors as well as students, alumni and current and former staff.
