Standout Graduate and Mission Gallery Craft Prize winner displays work over summer

BA Design Crafts graduate Megan Jamieson, who was awarded the Mission Gallery Craft Prize after judges visited her display at the Swansea College of Art Summer Degree Show, will display work for purchase at the gallery over summer.

Megan’s work was inspired by her homeland, and explored her connection to place on the West Wales farm she grew up on. She says, "I created pots from the clay I dug from a field which my Dad and Tadcu cared-for for 120 years. I believe the clay carries memory from the land, therefore this is some of my most personal work." 

Meg explored a broad range of techniques offered on the Design Crafts Degree at UWTSD including ceramics, metal, glass, enamel and print. It is the richness of craft taught on this course that has allowed Meg to embrace a beautiful range of material and process, and her installation is a celebration of that journey over 3 years.

Chosen from the work of all students graduating from craft-based degrees including Design Crafts, Glass, Surface Pattern and Textiles courses, the award gives Meg the opportunity to have her work showcased in the Retail Gallery at Mission over the summer months, and to produce a selection of pieces for retail at the gallery in the longer term.  

Meg’s work was selected by Rhian Wyn Stone, Exhibition and Retail Coordinator at Mission Gallery, “for the depth of her exploration, rigour of cultural and artistic enquiry, making skills, quality of enamelling, potential of ceramic making with home-sourced clay and retail appeal of enamel pieces.”

Anna Lewis, Lecturer in Design Crafts at UWTSD says: "We are so happy and proud for Meg. Winning this award will mean so much to her as she has worked incredibly hard on this beautiful and thoughtful collection, and will be an excellent start to what I’m sure will be an amazing career.

“We love the journey from the farm to the studio, and the fact that the work is made from the clay she dug up herself there makes it all the more meaningful. We wish her luck in her future career as a maker, and want to formally thank Mission Gallery for recognising the talent we nurture here at Design Crafts."
