The Ballad of Mulan one woman show comes to Lampeter
26.01.2022
To mark the Chinese Spring Festival and beginning of the Year of the Tiger, the Confucius Institute is proud to host The Ballad of Mulan at 19:30 on 11 February in the Old Hall, Lampeter Campus.
Based on the 6th Century Chinese poem popularised by the Disney movie, Red Dragonfly Productions’ Ballad of Mulan is a gritty, real-life story narrated by Mulan herself. Set during the time of civil war, our Chinese heroine sets out to save her family’s honour, and disguised as a man joins the Emperor’s army. Her telling of the story is visceral. Mulan is a warrior, a fighter, a woman who survived in a very male world for ten years without discovery.
The Ballad of Mulan was commissioned by British East Asian actor and producer Michelle Yim and written by Bloomsbury playwright Ross Ericson. In the afternoon of 11 February Ross Ericson will lead a dramaturgy workshop which explores the development of the script from Chinese poem to the stage production.
Michelle Yim is a British-East-Asian actor who graduated from ALRA. In addition to the numerous theatre roles, she has also appeared in many short films and in small roles on TV (Sherlock & Blue Murder), and works as a voice over artist in English, Cantonese and Mandarin. She is also one of the founders of Red Dragonfly Productions, which strives to bring stories from the East and Far East to a British and European audience.
The musical background is created by Pearl Yim, an international award-winning composer, conductor, orchestrator and arranger.
