UWTSD Fine Art student wins Brian Ross Memorial Award
06.07.2022
Adam Charlton, who graduates from a degree in Fine Art at University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s (UWTSD) Swansea College of Art this summer has been selected to receive the Brian Ross Memorial Award.
The award, administered by Arts Council Wales, is granted to five Fine Art graduates in Wales, who are each given £3000 to help establish themselves as creative professionals.
The £3000 prize was awarded to Adam following his exhibition at the degree showcase in May, where students displayed final work to be assessed and viewed by academic teams, the general public, and awarding bodies.
Adam’s work uses drawing and painting, allowing both mediums to playfully merge and overlap in an experimental space, using colour and line to create personal, emotive dialogues.
“I make art about my life – I am indiscriminate about what my art is about,” he says. “This year, I’ve made a lot of works by returning to one piece in very different emotional states and allowing one headspace to respond to another, rather than segregating.
“I think there are two kinds of painting – painting what one physically sees and painting one’s ideas. This body of work is mostly the latter. Even when I used images as reference, it was more about capturing a feeling or emotional relationship through time than about the visual characteristics of the image itself.”
Tim Davies, Professor of Fine Art at UWTSD says: “We are absolutely delighted that Adam has won the Brian Ross Memorial Award. The Fine Art team nominated Adam because he is an outstanding graduating student with enormous potential.
“He is also a Freelands Painting prize-winner. This accolade will see him exhibiting his work at the Freelands Foundation in London later this year, which is a great showcase for his paintings. We wish Adam all the best for his future journey as a visual artist and know that his commitment and fearless experimentation will stand him in good stead.”
