UWTSD graduate returns to campus that inspired him to teach

A BA Physical Education graduate from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David has been returning weekly to the Carmarthen campus to bring his school pupils for swimming lessons delivered by students that followed the same course as him.

Dafydd Jones came to UWTSD to study BA Physical Education in Carmarthen, and after graduating he decided to continue his studies within the University by studying PGCE in Swansea. He decided to study at UWTSD as he felt that studying a course specifically about PE that offered practical opportunities suited him.

Dafydd said: “I wasn't sure of what career I wanted to pursue after university but often thought about teaching. With many different opportunities to teach children in different aspects of PE, this helped me make my final decision that I wanted to be a teacher.”

Dafydd enjoyed the variety of modules that the Physical Education course offered. Each module was unique and often helped him to develop himself as an individual. During his time as a student, Dafydd felt that the course enabled him to learn about different elements of Physical Education, and he enjoyed the practical elements as he felt that he was learning as he was taking part.

He adds: “My undergraduate degree developed me in different ways and helped me organise my time a lot more. It developed my people skills, teaching skills and also my knowledge of how to live a healthy life.”

As part of the BA Physical Education programme, students gain valuable experiences such as teaching PE activities to local primary schools. Currently, level 4 students are delivering swimming activities to year 4 pupils at Ysgol y Model, where Dafydd is now a teacher.

He noted: “It felt weird the first time because it only feels like yesterday, I was teaching swimming to the local primary schools. Time has flown since being a student at UWTSD Carmarthen Trinity, but it was always the end goal after the first year of studying to become a teacher.”

The staff at UWTSD are very happy to see Dafydd’s development from a student to a teacher and is glad to see him returning to campus on a weekly basis.

Karin Thomas, Swimming Pool Manager and Part-Time Lecturer said: “It was a lovely surprise to see ‘Mr. Jones, (Dafydd) return to UWTSD in his new role as Year 4 class teacher in the Model School. The current students were also delighted to hear that his completion of the BA Physical Education course and PGCE in Swansea had resulted in him entering the teaching profession on graduating.”

Dylan Blain, UWTSD’s Physical Education Programme Manager said: “It’s always great to see graduates from our BA Physical Education programme progress in their careers. What a wonderful surprise it was to see Dafydd return with his pupils for swimming lessons he was delivering as part of his studies only a few years ago. It’s also great for our current students to speak and learn from someone who has come through the programme and recently started his teaching career.”

As Dafydd enjoys his career as a teacher, he also would like to encourage future students to follow in his footsteps.

“Make the most of the opportunities you have, the opportunities are amazing.  If you are thinking of enrolling in September, do it, but if you have any questions, I'm sure the staff would be more than happy to answer them and discuss the opportunities available.”
