A new centre providing free initial legal advice for the local community has been launched by the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD).

The advice is being provided by the University’s law students, supervised by Siân Turvey, the Legal Advice Centre Manager and Law Programme Manager, as well as from lecturers and practising lawyers from the University’s partner firm, Peter Lynn and Partners. The aim is to give students the opportunity to work alongside practising lawyers to advise real clients.

The UWTSD Legal Advice Centre is part of the Law Works charity network in England and Wales, which connects volunteer lawyers with people in need of legal advice, who are not eligible for legal aid.

Sian is a solicitor with over 18 years’ experience in professional legal practice, specialising in residential and commercial property, equity and trusts, wills, probate and landlords and tenant matters.

She said: “The University's Legal Advice Centre builds upon a long tradition of student volunteer work in the local community which benefits both the students as well as the community. The work carried out in the Centre, prioritises the needs of the community in providing initial access to vital legal services.”

Peter Lynn said: “We at Peter Lynn and partners are delighted to support this pro bono clinic to give the people of Swansea the widest access to legal advice and legal help. Whatever the issue we are all about preventing legal problems.”

The centre will be open during term times only at the University’s Business Campus, High Street, Swansea, on Wednesdays from 10am to 2pm and by appointment only.

It will provide written and initial advice on the following areas of law, civil litigation, contract, debt and insolvency, family, and housing.
