UWTSD works with John Burns Foundation to deliver biodiversity learning to primary pupils

Staff from University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) visited Canolfan John Burns Centre in Kidwelly to host a day of educational activities to pupils from Trimsaran Community Primary School alongside the Better Tomorrow team of The John Burns Foundation.
UWTSD’s Widening Access team invited year 3 pupils from Trimsaran Community Primary School to learn about bees, biodiversity and more at Canolfan John Burns Centre at the end of the summer term.
The Better Tomorrow team from the John Burns Foundation delivered inspiring sessions about bees and pollination whist Mared Anthony and Luned George from the Widening Access team led a Bee-Bot coding activity that saw pupils practice their communication, problem solving and teamwork skills.
This day was offered in keeping with a bee-themed programme that is being sponsored for the school by the Widening Access department called The Bumbles of Honeywood, created by 2B Enterprising to provide a comprehensive learning and development solution consisting of activities that can be used independently or as complete lesson plans.
John Burns, CEO of Burns Pet Food, who has recently been awarded an Honorary Fellowship from UWTSD in recognition of his support for charities and entrepreneurial innovation, says: “I am delighted that we have been able to work with staff from UWTSD to ensure that future generations are knowledgeable about biodiversity. These pupils will now understand that the health of our natural ecosystem is fundamentally linked to the health of our bees and other pollinators.”
Mared Anthony, Widening Access Officer at UWTSD, says: "It’s been great to partner up with the Better Tomorrow team on this event for Year 3 pupils at the end of term. They really enjoyed the activities and didn’t want to leave Canolfan John Burns Centre, which is always a good sign of a successful day! We look forward to maintaining this partnership with the John Burns Foundation and are excited about what we have planned for the near future."
