The next professorial lecture at UWTSD will be delivered by Professor Louise Steel on Wednesday, 16 March at 4pm.

The event is the latest in a series of monthly lectures to celebrate and share the expertise and achievements of UWTSD’s newly appointed Professors.

During her lecture, entitled ‘An Archaeological Odyssey: O Gaza i Gymru’, Professor Steel will journey through her research, focusing on three key areas which have shaped her scholarship. Based at the University’s Lampeter campus, Professor Steel, commented:

“I’m delighted to be taking part in this year’s Professorial lecture series and very much look forward to welcoming everybody to the Lampeter campus.

During the lecture, I hope to cover my research journey which include three key areas.  These include my archaeological work with communities in contested landscapes such as Gaza and Cyprus, my work in understanding people's social lives through their material culture and finally New Materialisms – embedding people in the world and working with materials.”

Professor Louise Steel graduated with a first-class degree in Archaeology of the East Mediterranean from the University of Liverpool in 1988 before completing a PhD at University College London in 1993.  Her doctoral studies focussed on Burial Customs in Cyprus at the Transition from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age.

Between 1995 and 1998 she held a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Edinburgh, having previously worked part-time as a lecturer in Classical Archaeology at the University of Reading. From Edinburgh, she moved to Israel, where she was appointed as Acting Director of the then British School of Archaeology in Jerusalem (BSAJ) (now the Kenyon Institute) before joining the academic staff in Lampeter in 2000.

Professor Medwin Hughes, DL, Vice-Chancellor, added:

“Our professorial lecture series showcases the breadth and quality of the research being carried out at UWTSD. It allows our professors an opportunity to share their research with a broad audience, including members of the public, in the presence of family, invited friends and colleagues.”

The Inaugural lecture will be held on Wednesday, 16 March 4pm, Founders’ Library, UWTSD Lampeter and online via Microsoft Teams.

This is a free event but guests are asked to book in advance by emailing: Digwyddiadau-Events@uwtsd.ac.uk

You will also be able to join online via Microsoft Teams
