“What’s the worst that can happen?” - A journey in academia from Mexico to Wales

Jessie Donaldson Lecture 2023

In a special lecture to celebrate International Women’s Day 2023, University of Wales Trinity Saint David invites Deputy Vice Chancellor Professor Elena Rodriguez-Falcon to share the journey of her life to date.

Professor Elena Rodriguez Falcon FREng

A female Mechanical Engineer born in Mexico, Elena came to the UK 25 years ago. Her transition into academia, learning about learning, and disrupting Higher Education are just some of the aspects of her career she will share and reflect on.

But professional and personal lives intertwine repeatedly, and many lessons are learnt in the process of her arrival in Wales. “What’s the worst that can happen?” is perhaps one of the most important lessons of all.

Join us from 12pm for tea and coffee before the lecture starts at 12.30pm. There will be a light lunch following the talk.

Tickets are free. Book your place on ticketsource.co.uk

The lecture is delivered in memory of Jessie Donaldson, for whom a blue plaque is mounted on the wall of the University's Dynevor building. Swansea-born Jessie was instrumental in the fight against slavery during the American Civil War, travelling to Ohio in the 1850s to operate a safe house, risking fines and prison sentences for offering shelter and protection for slaves as they tried to escape the southern states.
