Requirements

MA Programme Application

  1. Applicants should have a BA degree or above, or equivalent qualification from an approved degree awarding body of their countries.

  2. Regarding English proficiency, applicants must achieve a minimum Academic IELTS English Language score of 6.0 overall, with a minimum of 5.5 in each of the four components (reading, writing, listening and speaking), or a UK NARIC approved qualification from an English-speaking country. Please note that the University will only accept IELTS certificates from a UKVI-approved test centre.

  3. Applicants are required to have the ability to read, write and comprehend classical Chinese. This will be assessed. 

  4. Applicants are required to have basic knowledge of Chinese philology taught in the “Introduction to the Chinese Characters” 漢字入門 course. This will be assessed.

  5. Applicants should familiarise themselves with all the primers in the Becoming a Sage series 聖學根之根 and should be able to explicate one primer selected from the twenty-one texts within the series. This will be assessed.

  6. Applicants should be able to recite one of the selected core classics listed below on Confucianism, Buddhism and Daoism: (1) the Analects 論語, (2) the Great Learning 大學and the Doctrine of the Mean 中庸, (3) Excerpts from the Mencius 孟子治要, (4) Laozi 老子, (5) the “Inner Chapters” of the Zhuangzi 莊子內篇, (6) the Infinite Life Sutra 佛說大乘無量壽莊嚴清淨平等覺經, or (7) the Diamond Sutra 金剛經. This will be assessed.

  7. A personal statement of approximately 800 characters must be handwritten in classical Chinese and traditional Chinese characters. The statement should outline prior learning and experiences in Sinology.

  8. The reference letters may be provided by schoolteachers or academics of a discipline related to Sinology. Each letter must be provided in both Chinese and English and signed by the referee with their contact number and email address. Their signature can be in either Chinese or English. Their signature can be in either Chinese or English.

BA Programme Application

  1. Applicants should have a high school diploma or above, or equivalent qualification from an approved degree-awarding body of their countries.

  2. Pre-BA Programme Application

  1. Applicants must have a high school qualification or above, or equivalent qualification from a relevant educational institute (including community schools, with specified years of study and subjects learnt must be specified).
     
  2. Regarding English proficiency, applicants must achieve a minimum Academic IELTS English Language score of 5.0 overall, with a minimum score of 4.5 in each of the four components (reading, writing, listening and speaking), or attain a UK NARIC approved qualification from an English speaking country. Please note that the University will only accept IELTS certificates from a UKVI-approved test centre.

  3. Applicants are required to have the ability to read, write and comprehend classical Chinese. This will be assessed.

  4.   1. The deadline for 2024 academic year admissions to the Academy of Sinology is 1 June 2023
  2. Please refer to the Document Checklist below for required documents.
  3. Please convert all the application documents into PDF files and send them to the following two email addresses at the same time so that both the International Registry Team of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and the Chin Kung Multicultural Education Foundation can process the application simultaneously: international.registry@uwtsd.ac.uk (UWTSD International Registry) and sinology@uwtsd.ac.uk (Academy of Sinology).
  4. The Academy will assess each applicant’s qualifications and all documentation according to the criteria set in the Admission Guidance. Please note the Academy does not accept late or incomplete applications. For those who have passed the pre-screening, the Academy will inform them via email to participate in the virtual pre-sessional workshop, which will last for a month (from mid-July 2023), where the applicants’ academic competence and moral character will be assessed.

Suitability assessment

The Academy of Sinology will invite qualified applicants via email (by the end of June 2023) to participate in the free pre-sessional workshop between mid-July and mid-August 2023, and the result will be released in early September 2023.

Academic assessment

Applicants who have successfully completed the character assessment will be invited to attend a virtual academic assessment on 8-9 November 2023. Applicants will be notified of any changes to the assessment date. Results of the academic assessment will be released in mid-January 2024.

All applications should be accompanied by the following documents (please note that all the specified documents that are not in English or Welsh must include a certified English translation that can be independently verified by UKVI).   1. Two completed application forms – one copy written in English and the other in Chinese.
  2. A certified copy of your university degree certificate or proof of accredited examination of knowledge equivalent to a university degree in English. You are also expected to provide a copy of the academic transcript for your undergraduate courses.
  3. A valid IELTS certificate from a UKVI-approved test centre confirming the required minimum overall score and scores in all four components (reading, writing, listening and speaking)(This can be submitted by the end of May 2024) or its equivalent or proof of permanent residency/citizenship of an English speaking country.
  4. A certified copy of personal identification (ID and Passport).
  5. Appropriate documentation affirming financial position and requirements. (This can be submitted by the end of June 2024).
  6. Two recommendation letters issued by the referees.
  7. A personal statement of approximately 800 characters must be handwritten in classical Chinese and traditional Chinese characters. The statement should outline prior learning and experiences in Sinology.
  8. Background information sheet to illustrate one’s knowledge of classical Chinese and relevant information.
  9. Certified copy of your old visa if you have previously studied in the UK.

Tuition Fees and Boarding

Tuition Fees (2024-2025)

Pre-BA: £1,900 per year

BA: £8,000 per year

MA: £15,000 for 2023-2025 (there may be a 3-10% increase each academic year)

Accommodation

The Academy of Sinology provides on-campus accommodation for MA and BA students.

The following arrangements are available to new students:

  • Hugh Walker – Standard Self-Catering  with a shared lounge/kitchen.

Accommodation is a standard style; all bedrooms contain washbasins with students sharing bathroom facilities.  Accommodation fee for 20242025 – £3640 for 52 weeks. Payable in two termly instalments as follows: Term 1 and 2 £1820. This accommodation is mainly for BA students.

  • Daniel Dawson - En-suite Self-Catering - each room with its own shower, toilet and hand basin with a shared lounge/kitchen.

Accommodation fee for 2024–2025 – £5200 for 52 weeks – Payable in two termly instalments as follows: Term 1 and 2 £2600. This accommodation is mainly for MA and PhD students.

All students need to pay a £250 deposit. This fee will be retained as a bond for the session. Students will be informed of any changes for damages/fines.

What is included in your accommodation fee?

  • All utilities.
  • No extra costs for maintenance and repair.
  • 24-hour security patrols and emergency response.
  • Launderettes on site.
  • Support from the Accommodation Office.

Meal

  • Private Dining Room (PDR) – self-service buffet

Catered meals are vegetarian and buffet style, predominantly Chinese cuisine. The fee for catered meals for 2024–2025 is £3640 for 52 weeks. Payable in two termly instalments as follows: Term 1 and 2 £1820. There will be a discount for students.
