I am currently on a two-year secondment to Yr Athrofa at UWTSD having spent 28 years teaching German, French and Spanish in schools in South Wales. For 16 of these years, I led a team of six German, French and Welsh teachers in the Languages Faculty of a Swansea-based comprehensive school.
The Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) department consistently achieved GCSE results above both national and Local Authority (LA) averages, despite being in an area of significant social deprivation. For three years, I was the Swansea MFL Lead for the EWR consortium, where I supported MFL departments in the Swansea LA to achieve the three aims of the Welsh Government’s “Global Futures” plan: to increase MFL uptake beyond their compulsory years; to improve the quality of teaching in MFL; and to improve student outcomes in MFL.
In this role, I took part in a study trip to Canada, who are highly regarded in the world rankings for their outcomes in language learning, and subsequently cascaded training down to MFL departments in the consortium. I have been the Principal Examiner for GCSE German for the EDUQAS examination board since the new specification which commenced in 2016 and have authored all Component 4 papers.
I have held a number of leadership roles in schools – most recently leading a Specialist Teaching Facility for students with speech and language needs and in 2017, I was appointed to the role of “Good to Excellent Teacher Coach” as a result of my proven track record as an excellent classroom practitioner.
This role allowed me to work closely with individual members of teaching staff, departments, student teachers and cover supervisors to bring about positive change in their practice through reflection, enquiry, joint planning and professional dialogue.
At the very heart of everything I did in this capacity, was improving standards of teaching and learning to enable learners to achieve the best possible outcomes through creative and innovative approaches to teaching designed to excite and engage the learners.
Prior to my secondment, I was the Network Lead for student teachers at UWTSD. As a Lead School of the Athrofa, I was a member of the Executive Board and played a significant role in the accreditation process and co-construction of the new Initial Teacher Education programme that was launched in September 2019. In June 2019, I participated in a study trip to the Netherlands with Yr Athrofa to examine curriculum reform and teacher training.

In 2015 I was appointed by the BBC to up-date the German pages of its BBC Bitesize website in preparation for the new GCSE that was sat for the first time in 2018. In this role, I collaborated with other German educationalists in England to completely revamp the revision explanations and practice activities.
