Lecturer

E-mail: r.smith1@uwtsd.ac.uk

Lecturer within the Institute of Management and Health attached to the Police Apprenticeship Programme. I am responsible for the initial six months of police training, where I work closely with both South Wales Police and Gwent Police within their training departments where newly appointed officers receive their training. I facilitate student assessments within this period and provide both academic and pastoral feedback to support students through their studies.

My professional background is in policing where I spent just under fifteen years working within a police force. I spent eleven-and-a-half years working with the neighbourhood teams. My specific interest was within training, and in October 2016 I transferred my skills to the learning and development department where I developed and delivered initial police courses to police staff and uniformed officers. I joined UWTSD in April 2021 and began lecturing for the Police Apprenticeship Programme.

I oversee the initial police training module for the Police Apprenticeship Programme as well as assist the team with modules run within the programme. The programme works closely with police forces and I attend police forces to deliver content to policing students.

I am particularly interested in research within the educational field.
