Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies
Research in Celtic Languages and Literature
The Centre for Advanced Welsh and Celtic Studies (CAWCS) was established by the University of Wales in 1985 as a dedicated research centre conducting team-based projects on the languages, literatures, culture and history of Wales and the other Celtic countries.
It is located in Aberystwyth, adjacent to the National Library of Wales, which is an internationally renowned copyright library with excellent research facilities.

Our work is currently focused on the following areas of specialism:
- Early Celtic Languages

- Welsh and British Name Studies
- Visual Arts
- Enlightenment and Romanticism in Wales and Europe

We also have staff members working on Women’s Writing, Breton Literature and Travel Writing. We welcome applications for postgraduate research and visiting scholars from all over the world.
We co-operate closely with the National Library of Wales through our Strategic Alliance: both institutions are joint publishers of the Dictionary of Welsh Biography (ed. Professor Emeritus Dafydd Johnston) and The Repertory of Welsh Manuscripts and Scribes c.800-c.1800 by Dr Daniel Huws.

CAWCS offers unique opportunities for postgraduate students to work alongside specialists in a dynamic and supportive environment. We welcome enquiries about MPhil/PhD topics in any of our research areas.
