Research

At UWTSD, we are proud of our rich tradition of research, which spans a wide range of disciplines including theology, religious studies, history, classics, archaeology, anthropology, and philosophy. With a global outlook and a focus on contemporary challenges, our work actively engages with pressing issues like sustainability, climate change, and globalisation.

Our research is designed to make a meaningful impact in the real world. We foster an interdisciplinary environment where ancient cultures and modern communities intersect, helping to connect the past with the present in innovative ways.

Humanities

From the beginning in 1822, Theology and Biblical Studies were at the core of UWTSD, supplemented later by Church History and religious history, Study of Religions, Islamic Studies, Philosophy, Ethics, Classics, and Archaeology and Anthropology. More recently, Chinese Studies, English Literature, and Interfaith Studies were developed. Our work brings the past to life and interrogates the present to inspire a better, informed future. This is achieved, through several interweaving researches, drawing upon projects in Wales, the UK, the Mediterranean, Egypt, the Middle East, Africa, China, and the Americas that together cohere into a global perspective of humanity.

These diverse, yet interconnected themes, allow us to bridge past and present and feed into our world-class, research-led teaching.
