Rowan's BSc Environment, Sustainability and Climate Change Experience

A view of SA1 and Swansea Bay on a sunny day; a grassy hillside occupies the foreground; beyond that the marina, the beach, the water of the bay and the headland of the Mumbles are visible.

What is your favourite thing about Swansea campus?

I study at the SA1 Waterfront Campus, and I love how close to the sea it is. I’ve seen seals on my walk into uni, and my favourite seat in the library gives me a view over the ocean while I’m studying!

Why did you choose UWTSD?

I wanted to study close enough to my family to visit often, as I have a young sister. I also wanted a Welsh university that engages with Welsh environmental issues, as these are so often overlooked in the wider UK context. A university with good disability support was also vital, as I am Autistic and ADHD, and I’d heard good things about the quality of support available.

What do you hope to do when you graduate?

I want to work in environmental communication and engagement, ideally increasing access to nature and environmental spaces and knowledge for marginalised groups such as disabled and LGBTQ+ people.

What do you enjoy outside your studies?

I love Swansea! I live here year round with my partner, and we’ve found there’s a lovely local community. Places like the Environment Centre are really good for getting involved in local environmental action, and venue spaces such as Elysium always have interesting creative events.

What is your favourite thing about BSc Environment, Sustainability and Climate Change?

The course covers a really broad range of topics, which I’ve really enjoyed and benefited from. At the same time, you can easily focus on your particular interests for assignments, using different lenses to examine your interests throughout the course. There are lots of opportunities for practical engagement, and all the lecturers are really supportive. One of my favourite trips we went on, we got to see wind turbines that hadn’t been put up yet. It was really cool to see them up close, and how large they are!

A couch and bookshelves on the top floor of the Fforwm Library; a window occupies the whole wall and light floods in.

Would you recommend UWTSD and why?

Being disabled, the smaller campus and class sizes make it possible for me to attend university. It’s very personal, people know you and what you’re up to; you’re not just a face in the crowd.
