Exciting Summer Term for Childhood, Youth, and Education Department

This summer has been a remarkable term for the University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s  Childhood, Youth and Education Department. The department has had the pleasure of engaging with various schools and colleges from across Wales through a series of enriching visits These interactions included our team conducting play and creative workshops at colleges and hosting school and college courses on the Swansea and Carmarthen campuses.

The team were delighted to offer workshops and information sessions in Gower College, Coleg Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire College, Bridgend College, Coleg Sir Gâr, Cam wrth Gam, Mudiad Meithrin learners, and students from Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr, Caldicott School, Greenhill School, Ysgol Bro Dur - Ystalyfera, Ysgol Llangynwyd, Ysgol Cwm Rhymni, Ysgol Bro Eden, and Bishop Vaughan Catholic School. 

The workshops aim to give students a taste of university life and to dispel myths about higher education, specifically in the fields of Childhood, Youth Work, Education, and Sociology. These sessions support the curriculum in areas such as play, creativity, wellbeing, equality, rights, and professional practice, demonstrating how we integrate practical work with theory and research.

Glenda Tinney UWTSD’s Early Years Senior Lecturer and workshop facilitator said: 

“It has been a complete honour to interact with so many enthusiastic and motivated students from across Wales and have an opportunity to engage in fun practical workshops while also answering student questions about University  life. We want to develop our  visits and workshops so we can offer more opportunities for schools and College and would love to hear from teachers and students about what we could facilitate to help their current study or support them find out about the different programmes we deliver. We can offer much of our provision bilingually and through the medium of Welsh and are happy to tailor  sessions to the needs of schools / colleges.

“You can see from the photographs we had so much fun but this was also valuable learning in terms of thinking about creative thinking, value of play, team work and the accessibility of Higher Education.”

Natasha Jones,  Lecturer, Welsh Medium Study Lead and workshop facilitator said: 

“Exploring the use of the Welsh language through play allowed individuals from schools/colleges to learn through an engaging and joyful experience. Additionally, workshops such as these encourage collaboration, working in groups to develop teamwork and bilingual communication skills. Direct engagement with us as staff allows for complex concepts to be explored and explained, and questions to be answered, making our university more accessible to all. We hope that building positive relationships also provides comfort for individuals, helping us to foster a supportive and effective learning community within higher education. Seeing individuals gain new skills and knowledge through our workshops is extremely fulfilling and helps to build connections with our local/wider community. I hope to continue in developing these sessions, tailored to the needs of schools and colleges. Our aim is, and will always be, to have endless fun whilst learning!”
