Exhibition to highlight ‘The Worth of Wool’ during Sustainability Week

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David will highlight ‘The Worth of Wool’ in an interactive exhibition as part of Sustainability Week.

Held at UWTSD’s IQ Campus on the SA1 Waterfront in Swansea, this exhibition is about the important role wool has played at different points in history and how it can help create a sustainable future.

The exhibition is made up of several displays with many objects that people can handle and play with including raw fleece and Tup Trump cards. The exhibition will be on all week from the 16th of October, and there will be a talk about the role of wool in sustainability and a needle-felting workshop suitable for all ages on Thursday 19th October at 4 pm.

The exhibition has been curated by UWTSD’s Liberal Arts graduate Deborah Mercer. She said:

“The exhibition is designed around the work I did as an undergraduate at UWTSD. Each assignment has added a different element to the overall exhibition from specific research on Viking sails to exploring how to make an engaging display about an activity through the use of interactive activities.”

The aim of the exhibition is to show how wool can play a large role in creating a more sustainable future. She adds:

“We have many farms in the British Isles that produce a huge amount of wool that is currently burnt or buried as it has little financial worth. But wool clothing lasts a long time and is repairable, wool compost is rich in nitrogen and can be used instead of peat-based compost and other products like pure wool insulation can have a huge impact on the sustainability value of a new build or as a green way to retrofit an old building.”

“ I hope that people will leave thinking of wool as a natural resource in Wales that is currently undervalued and should be celebrated more. I hope they will think about buying more wool-based products in the future, either a 100% British Wool jumper or using products from Wool Insulation Wales to improve the energy rating of their home.”
