The ‘Residuum’ academic conference was hosted by the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) from August 8 to 11, both online and at the Alex Design Centre in Swansea. The conference was organised by the Swansea Professional Doctorate in Art and Design programme as an engaging and thought-provoking event that brought together scholars, art, and design practitioners from around the world.

Spanning three days, the ‘Residuum’ conference provided a comprehensive platform for participants to delve into critical discussions and innovative ideas that were centred around the themes and practices shaping the past, present, and determining the future. Recognizing the global reach of the event, all panels had been conducted in both English and Mandarin, ensuring an environment of diversity and inclusivity for intellectual exchange.

The talks served as a springboard for interdisciplinary discussions, enabling participants to share their research, insights, and practices with a broader audience. Through the lenses of art, design, and culture, the ‘Residuum’ conference aimed to foster meaningful collaborations and generate future ideas, which have the potential to shape these fields.

Yueyao Hu who teaches the course was impressed with the nature of the research from the students. He said: “As a Chinese researcher myself, I know just how difficult it is to express yourself in English, especially when using complex ideas and language. The students have acquitted themselves well and it makes me happy and proud to see them develop so much throughout the course.”

Timi O’Neill, Programme Manager of the Professional Doctorate in Art and Design, said: “This year, we had the honour of hearing speeches from scholars at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, Nanjing University of the Arts, Fujian Jiangxia University, and Hubei Institute of Fine Arts. Having some distinguished professors from China means Residuum became what we wanted it to be, a platform that brought scholars and practitioners together to engage in creative dialogues, challenge existing paradigms, and explore new horizons within art and design practices.”
