Students at UWTSD’s Swansea College of Art transformed an empty shop in the city centre into an exhibition space.

A student operates a record player in a red-lit art installation, using a remote control.

As part of a recent project facilitated by Urban Foundry, UWTSD Art and Design Foundation lecturers, Jason Cartwright and Becky Williams invited students to experiment within space through video and projection.

The collaboration offered the students opportunities to explore light and composition, and ways in which identification of appropriate spaces can hugely impact upon experimentation and development of ideas, through reframing initial concepts in an alternative architectural context.

Katherine Clewett, Programme Director at UWTSD said: “The students thoroughly enjoyed stepping out of their familiar environments to explore the cityscape. Allowing artists and student to occupy these spaces creatively is such a fantastic opportunity.”

Caroline Thraves, Academic Director said: “This project is an innovative way to make use of a unit and gives our students the chance to get involved with a real-life exhibition. There is so much going on locally with arts and culture, and the University and its students play a big part of this.

“We always embrace opportunities to get involved with the community wherever we can, as we have the perfect central location for people to showcase their work to thousands of visitors each day.”
