Experts from TWI and University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) were awarded the John Grimwade Medal at an award ceremony at the British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) annual NDT and CM conference, NDT 2023/CM 2023.

A silver-grey medal on display in a black-lined box; the text on the medal reads – The John Grimwade Medal Awarded to Ross Hanna 2022; beneath a royal warrant the gold text on the box lining reads –Toye, Kenning and Spencer Ltd London.

The award is conferred by BINDT for the best paper by an Institute member to appear in the Institute’s journal in the preceding year. This award, which was inaugurated in 1981, commemorates the late E J Grimwade MC HonFInstNDT, who was a major pioneering figure in the NDT world.

TWI Robotics Engineer, Ross Hanna, who currently works at TWI Technology Centre (Wales), was accompanied by UWTSD’s Professor of Applied NDT, Professor Peter Charlton to accept the award on behalf of themselves and co-authors, TWI Software Consultant, Dr Mark Sutcliffe and UWTSD’s Senior Lecturer in the School of Applied Computing, Dr Stephen Mosey.

The award-winning paper, ‘Efficient algebraic image reconstruction technique for computed tomography’, was published in Insight, Vol 64, No 6, pp 326-333 in June 2022.

Professor Peter Charlton said: “Our research in the field of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) benefits from the unique cluster of NDT technology companies located within Wales and in particular our ongoing industrial partnership with TWI Technology Centre (Wales).  We are particularly pleased to receive the prestigious John Grimwade medal along with our partners at TWI for the second time, which helps underline the world leading nature of our applied NDT research work and is also a testament of the benefits of forming strategic academic industrial partnerships.”

Dr Mark Sutcliffe also commented, “Research and development of novel Non-Destructive Testing methods is only possible through collaboration with local academic institutions. As industrial PhD supervisor, it has been an honour to have collaborated on this research which has help build and strengthen TWI’s capability and reputation.”
