The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) is abuzz with excitement today (12 July) as the Class of 2024 celebrates their graduation at the Lampeter campus. The graduation ceremony is a tribute to the students’ hard work and dedication, providing a moment for the entire University community to honour their impressive achievements.

Professor Elwen Evans, KC, Vice-Chancellor of UWTSD, expressed the significance of the occasion: “Graduation gives us the opportunity to come together as an academic community to celebrate our graduates’ success and to share that success with family and friends. The qualifications that you have all achieved are recognised internationally and are your passport to the world—a world that needs your skills, your energy, your creativity, your compassion, and your leadership. Your education has been more than a preparation for a career; it is a foundation for lifelong learning and a commitment to making a difference. You have the potential to use all that you have learned to make a positive impact on the future well-being of our society and to the lives of others. You can be very proud of your achievements today. You have shown that you have the determination, the commitment, and the resilience to succeed.”

Addressing the graduates during the ceremony, Chair of the University Council, Emlyn Dole, commented:

“I think it’s fair to say that you, this class of 24 are a very special cohort. You joined us and began your studies and your initiation to University life in the middle or at the tail end of a pandemic having to adjust to new requirements and to new ways of working.

But you did all that and so much more. The road to here and to your graduation has sometimes been defined as a long steep climb. But you made it, and some. And to borrow a mountaineering analogy often used by experienced climbers, ‘it’s not the mountain that we conquer, it’s ourselves.’

But however you might choose to define your journey or whatever analogy you might employ to describe it you’ll forgive me for staying with the mountain for a moment. Yes it can sometimes be a long, steep climb, but you made it, so take a moment, here at the summit, to be proud of your accomplishments because here you are.

I want to give you a heartfelt send-off as we all do a final farewell as you leave the hallowed halls of academia. On this most significant of days be so very very proud of yourselves and the platform you have built, it is a solid base set on firm foundations that will prove to be vital in your successful future. My heartfelt congratulations to you all.”

Adding to the celebrations, the University will present an Honorary Award to Andrew Curl for his professional achievements and also for his unwavering support and dedication to UWTSD. Andrew Curl will receive an Honorary Fellowship.

For those unable to attend in person, UWTSD offers live streaming of the ceremony on the University’s website.
