UWTSD hosts ‘Learning Through Nature’ Teachers Conference in Lampeter.

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David is looking forward to hosting the ‘Learning Through Nature’ Teachers Conference in Lampeter.

This conference, held at the Lampeter Campus on Friday, June 9th is organised in the name of Tir Glas, and is aimed at Welsh primary schools. The main theme of the conference will be ‘learning through nature.’ The day will be led by Richard Dunne, author of the book for teachers ‘The Harmony Project’ which was translated into Welsh by the University last year.

MP Ben Lake, and AS Elin Jones will also be present at the event to welcome people and to share their vision on this exciting project.

It will also be an opportunity for the University to celebrate the work of pupils from ten schools from Ceredigion who have been part of a pilot project under Richard’s care recently. The work that has been carried out so far is of a very high standard and is a model of best practice that the University wishes to share with the rest of the primary schools in Wales as they plan for the New Curriculum for Wales.

Richard Dunne said:

“Following the translation of the Harmony teachers’ guide into Welsh last year, it has been a great pleasure to work with ten Ceredigion schools to develop a nature-based Harmony curriculum over the course of this academic year.  The projects of learning that will be shared at the Harmony in Education conference are wonderful and we are delighted that there will be lots of children from the schools in attendance to present their work and sing their Harmony song. We look forward to engaging with more schools next academic year and thank the University of Wales Trinity Saint David for all their generous support and enthusiasm for this pilot project.”

The programme for the day will also include presentations on ‘The Story of Lunch and Local Food Provenance’ by Carwyn Graves, ‘The Importance of the Food Plate’ by Mrs Anwen Hughes from FUW Cymru/Wales, poetry by Dr Hywel Griffiths, music by Steffan Rees from CERED, farming by Rebecca Holden from Bwlchwernen Farm and geometry by Richard Dunne.    

UWTSD Lampeter Campus Provost, Gwilym Dyfri Jones, said:

“The University, through its Tir Glas initiative, is pleased to have been able to support the Harmony Pilot Project with the ten primary schools in Ceredigion and we very much look forward to hearing about the work undertaken by the pupils during the conference. With the support of UWTSD, Richard Dunne will continue to mentor these ten schools during the forthcoming school year. Two further schools from those attending the conference will also receive support from Richard to develop the Harmony project with their pupils from September. This is an exciting, important and timely project that hopefully will be rolled out across the whole of Wales in due course.”
