The Importance of Bees has been an exciting multimedia project developed by third year students and staff from The University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s  BA (Hons) Adventure Filmmaking course on the Carmarthen campus.

The project saw a collaboration between the UWTSD Sustainability Team, local Bee Keepers, and Year 6 pupils from Model Church in Wales School. Together, they embarked on a journey to shine a spotlight on campus biodiversity, showcasing the work of the university’s Grounds Team and the Lampeter Apiary, while actively engaging  primary school children through developing multimedia assets.

With a brief to explain the importance of bees to year 6 children, the students developed a range of teaching and learning materials that incorporated digital technologies such as app design, videos, practical exercises, and interactive play.

During a special visit to the campus, pupils from Model Church in Wales School were treated to an immersive experience in the University’s state-of-the-art Samsung immersive room. Here, students presented their multimedia creations, educating children about biodiversity conservation, and inspiring future environmental stewards.

The project also collaborated with Mêl Gwenyn Gruffydd Welsh Honey, who provided video assets from their popular YouTube channel, and were able to provide feedback based on their expertise and experience in the industry of bee keeping.

UWTSD’s BA (Hons) Adventure Filmmaking Programme Manger Dr Brett Aggersberg said of the opportunity:

“This project is one of our most exciting and challenging third year assessment. It has evolved to meet the needs of contemporary industry, and it creatively explores new technologies. The students that take this course graduate with a range of skills that set them apart from other programmes within the subject area. They are able to balance the needs of clients and the audience through their understanding of research, creativity, and sustainability”.

The collaborative efforts of the various stakeholders spotlight the rich biodiversity present across UWTSD’s campuses, emphasising the importance of sustainable campus management practices. Through multimedia assets, the beauty and significance of campus ecosystems are shared with a wider audience, promoting appreciation and conservation efforts.

Kate Williams, Head of Sustainability & Environment for the University of Wales Trinity Saint David said: “The collaborative partnership between the Adventure Filming course and the Sustainability Team underscores the university’s commitment to sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and community engagement. By leveraging filmmaking and media production as a tool to showcase campus biodiversity, and engage primary school children, UWTSD demonstrates its dedication to environmental stewardship and education. Through continued collaboration and innovation, UWTSD will continue to inspire and empower future generations to cherish and protect biodiversity for years to come.”
