Congratulations to Caryl Jones, Manager of Yr Atom in Carmarthen, who has been successfully accepted as one of the 2023 cohort of the Future Leaders Academy.

Caryl Jones

This innovative and ambitious academy, which is led by the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales, has now been running for three years and offers opportunities to inspire young people to learn and improve upon their leadership skills as a means of fulfilling the aspirations of the Well-being of Future Generations Act.

Caryl, who hails originally from Maesybont in the Gwendraeth valley and has been at the helm in Yr Atom since 2022, will join a select cohort of 30 participants from all parts of Wales’s public, private and voluntary sectors following a competitive application process.

Caryl said:

“I am extremely proud to get a place in the Future Leaders Academy. I feel that it has come at the right time for me as Manager of Yr Atom. This is an excellent opportunity for me to develop myself personally but also to develop my leadership skills to ensure that Yr Atom has a strong leader. In addition, it is a great opportunity to learn more about the Well-being of Future Generations Act and the seven well-being goals, and this will be very useful as we plan the future of Yr Atom.”

“I am looking forward to collaborating with people from all parts of Wales and networking with new partners.”

The Academy team in the Future Generations Commissioner’s office will design and provide the programme, and during the course, the participants will learn leadership skills and good practice related to the Well-being of Future Generations Act and its seven well-being goals. With Wales and a vibrant culture where the Welsh language thrives as one of those goals, it is an opportunity for Caryl to learn about the good practice of others, as well as intensively consider how to incorporate the seven goals fully into the work of Yr Atom together with the voluntary work she does locally with the Young Famers, Yr Urdd and other movements.

Carys Ifan, Director of the S4C Centre, Yr Egin, which has strategic responsibility for Yr Atom, said:

“Caryl has held firmly onto the reins of Yr Atom since being appointed, and over this last year and a half has shown her ability and potential. It is wonderful to see her succeed in becoming a member of this distinctive Academy and take the next step in her personal development as a leader who will be certain to have a positive influence on the future.”

Gwilym Dyfri Jones, Provost of the Carmarthen and Lampeter Campuses, added:

“The University would like to congratulate Caryl on her achievement. She has already shown, in her role as Manager of Yr Atom, that she is an instinctive leader, and there will be an opportunity – through the medium of this course – for her to further refine her leadership skills. We wish her the best.”

Following Caryl’s period in the Academy, which is a combination of virtual, in-person and residential sessions, she will receive an invitation to be part of the academy’s alumni network, where the team will continue to support her with her career.

Korina Tsioni, Future Leaders Changemaker and leader of the Academy, said:

“Following two successful cohorts, we have just launched our third Future Leaders Academy 3.0 . We are really happy to have Caryl in the cohort this year, she came through the open recruitment process, and she impressed the panel with her application and interview. We can’t wait to see her progress throughout the academic year, with the rest of the cohort. And also, what she does next, as an FGC Academy Alumni.”
